Germany remains a popular choice among Indian students looking for internationally recognised higher education and strong academic opportunities. But getting admission to a German university is only one part of the journey.<\/p>

The student visa process has also become increasingly digital and structured. At the same time, applicants need to pay close attention to financial proof, programme eligibility, student employment rules and, for certain Master’s applicants from India, the newly introduced Digital Master Test (dMAT).<\/p>

Understanding these requirements before submitting a visa application can help students avoid unnecessary delays and documentation issues.<\/p>

A More Digital Visa Application Process<\/h4>

Germany has expanded the use of its Consular Services Portal, allowing applicants to begin certain national visa applications online.<\/p>

For students, this means the initial application and document submission can be handled digitally through the portal before the applicant proceeds with the required in-person stage.<\/p>

However, going digital does not mean the entire visa process can be completed remotely. Applicants still need to attend an appointment in person for requirements such as biometric data, including fingerprints and a photograph, and verification of original documents where required.<\/p>

For Indian students, it is therefore important to treat the online application as the beginning of the process rather than as a replacement for the visa appointment.<\/p>

Financial Proof Remains an Important Part of the Application<\/h4>

Students applying for a German study visa must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay.<\/p>

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is one of the commonly used ways to demonstrate financial support. The current amount listed for students is \u20ac11,904, corresponding to \u20ac992 per month for a 12-month period.<\/p>

A blocked account is not the only possible form of financial proof. Depending on the circumstances, applicants may also be able to demonstrate funding through options such as a scholarship, a formal declaration of commitment or other accepted evidence of financial support.<\/p>

Students should also ensure that their financial documentation is clear and consistent with the requirements applicable to their application.<\/p>

Can International Students Earn While Studying?<\/h4>

Germany allows international students holding the relevant study residence permit to engage in employment alongside their studies, subject to the applicable rules.<\/p>

Students from third countries can generally work for up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year. The current rules also provide an alternative framework of up to 20 hours per week in certain circumstances.<\/p>

This can provide students with an opportunity to earn additional income during their studies. However, students should not treat part-time employment as a substitute for the financial resources required for the visa application.<\/p>

The initial visa application still requires applicants to demonstrate that they can support themselves according to the applicable financial requirements.<\/p>

Your Course Matters More Than You May Think<\/h4>

Having a university admission letter does not mean that every type of programme will automatically fit the requirements for a German student visa.<\/p>

Applicants should carefully review the nature of their programme, the institution offering it and the conditions attached to the course.<\/p>

This becomes particularly important where a programme includes online, hybrid or other non-traditional study components. Students should establish whether their chosen programme meets the relevant requirements before making financial commitments or submitting their visa application.<\/p>

The German authorities also require evidence that the applicant has been accepted for studies by the relevant higher education institution.<\/p>

A New APS Step for Certain Master’s Applicants From India<\/h4>

One of the most important recent developments for Indian students is the introduction of the Digital Master Test (dMAT) for selected Master’s applicants.<\/p>
