Two developments are particularly worth knowing about. The Home Office has published a new Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules,<\/a> while the UK has also expanded eGate access to more children travelling with adults.<\/p>

A Wide Range of Immigration Rules Is Being Updated<\/h4>

On 3 September 2026, the Home Office published Statement of Changes HC 584, making amendments across a number of areas of the Immigration Rules.<\/p>

      HC 584 contains amendments affecting the Skilled Worker route and other areas of the Immigration Rules.<\/p>

      However, it is important not to confuse this particular statement of changes with separate policy discussions about future immigration reforms.<\/p>

      HC 584 itself does not introduce a new Skilled Worker salary threshold or establish the previously discussed broader \u201cearned settlement\u201d model.<\/p>

      Since 8 July 2026, eligible children aged 8 and 9 can use UK eGates when travelling with an accompanying adult. They must also be at least 120 cm tall and meet the other eligibility requirements.<\/p>

      The change extends access across more than 290 eGates at UK airports and juxtaposed border-control locations. The government estimates that around 1.5 million additional children could become eligible to use eGates over the following year based on previous arrival figures.<\/p>

      The current border guidance confirms that children aged 8 or above must be accompanied by an adult and be at least 120 cm tall to use an eGate. They also need an eligible biometric passport and the required digital immigration status or record.<\/p>

      What This Means for Families Travelling to the UK<\/h4>

      For families, the expanded eGate access could mean a simpler arrival process, particularly during busy travel periods.<\/p>

      However, being eligible to use an eGate does not remove the need to meet the UK’s immigration and border requirements.<\/p>

      Travellers should still make sure that:<\/p>

      • Their passport is valid and linked correctly where required.<\/li>
      • Their immigration permission is valid.<\/li>
      • Their digital immigration status is accessible.<\/li>
      • Children meet the age and height requirements.<\/li>
