New Zealand has introduced important immigration changes affecting visitor visa applications and international graduates.
From 24 September 2026, most new visitor visa applications must be submitted through Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online system. At the same time, a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is scheduled to open for applications from 16 November 2026, giving eligible graduates up to six months of open work rights.
Visitor visa applications move to enhanced Immigration Online
Immigration New Zealand has moved most new visitor visa applications to its enhanced online platform.
From 24 September 2026, applicants can no longer create new applications for the affected visitor visa categories through the old online system. New applications must be submitted through enhanced Immigration Online.
Applicants who already have a draft application in the old system have an important deadline.
7 October 2026 is the final date for old-system drafts
Existing draft applications can still be completed and submitted through the old system until 7 October 2026.
From 8 October 2026, remaining drafts covered by the transition will be deleted. Applicants who still want to apply will need to start a new application through enhanced Immigration Online.
This makes the deadline particularly important for anyone who started a visitor visa application but has not yet submitted it.
New six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
International graduates will soon have another option to remain in New Zealand after completing eligible studies.
Applications for the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will open on 16 November 2026.
The visa will provide eligible graduates with up to six months of open work rights, giving them time to look for employment and, where appropriate, explore a transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
To qualify, applicants generally need to have completed an eligible NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualification, studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks, and meet other requirements.
Applicants must also have at least NZD $5,000 in available funds and generally need to apply within three months of their New Zealand student visa expiring.
The visa can only be granted once to an individual and cannot be extended.
Post-Study Work Visa eligibility is also expanding
From 16 November 2026, New Zealand will extend Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to certain graduates who complete an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma.
The applicant must:
- Complete the Graduate Diploma full-time in New Zealand
- Complete the full duration of the qualification
- Hold a bachelor’s degree completed in New Zealand or overseas
- Meet the other Post-Study Work Visa requirements
Cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning does not qualify for the new Graduate Diploma pathway.
Eligible graduates may receive an open Post-Study Work Visa, with the length depending on the applicable requirements and period of study.
What this means for Indian applicants
These changes are particularly relevant to Indian visitors, international students and graduates planning to build a longer-term pathway in New Zealand.
If you are applying for a visitor visa
Check whether your application must now be submitted through enhanced Immigration Online.
If you already have an old-system draft, complete and submit it by 7 October 2026 to avoid having to start again after the old forms close.
If you are planning to study in New Zealand
The new graduate pathways may be relevant depending on your qualification, study duration and previous visa history.
A Level 5–7 qualification that does not qualify for the regular Post-Study Work Visa may potentially lead to the new six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa if all requirements are satisfied.
Students considering a Level 7 Graduate Diploma should also review the expanded Post-Study Work Visa rules taking effect from 16 November 2026.
A practical point for prospective students
The new graduate options do not mean that every course automatically leads to a work visa.
The outcome can depend on:
Qualification level | Study duration | Course eligibility | Previous New Zealand visas | Bachelor’s degree | Financial requirements | Application timing
Students should therefore check the exact qualification and visa pathway before choosing a course based on post-study immigration options.
New Zealand Immigration Profile Assessment
If you are considering study, employer sponsorship or skilled migration to New Zealand, your qualification, occupation, experience, visa history and personal circumstances can affect the options available to you.
