The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) introduces new temporary work opportunities and future immigration benefits for eligible Indian nationals. The agreement entered into force , with different measures taking effect on separate timelines.
Key Changes for Indian Applicants
1. New Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) Visa Pathways
Combined cap: Up to 5,000 visa holders at any one time.
Visa duration: Up to three years.
Eligibility: Applicants must meet the relevant job-offer, qualification, English-language, health and character requirements.
Residence: These temporary visas do not, by themselves, provide a pathway to residence.
2. Extended Post-Study Work Rights for PhD Graduates
Eligible Indian graduates who complete a PhD in New Zealand may qualify for post-study work visas of up to four years under the new arrangements. This measure is scheduled to take effect from 16 November 2026.
3. Future Working Holiday Scheme
The agreement also provides for a future working holiday scheme for Indian nationals.
Age eligibility: 18–30 years.
Expected annual allocation: 1,000 places.
Stay duration: Up to 12 months.
Timeline: The scheme is to be introduced within two years of the FTA taking effect.
What This Means for Indian Applicants
The agreement creates potential opportunities for eligible Indian professionals and PhD graduates seeking work experience in New Zealand. However, each visa pathway has specific eligibility requirements, and the benefits do not apply automatically to every Indian national.
