Immigration New Zealand has introduced changes affecting student visa work conditions, English-language assessments, visa processing and the period certain students can remain in New Zealand after completing their courses.
Key Changes for International Students
1. Master’s-by-Research Work Rights
Eligible master’s-by-research students are subject to revised work conditions. The stated arrangements allow eligible students to work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled holidays, subject to their visa conditions.
2. English-Language Assessments
English-language ability is receiving greater emphasis in student visa assessments. Applicants should ensure they meet the relevant requirements for their circumstances.
3. Student Visa Processing
Immigration New Zealand can suspend visa processing in additional circumstances involving education-provider compliance. This may affect applications connected to providers subject to relevant compliance issues.
4. Additional Time After Course Completion
For relevant student visas, the post-course expiry period increases from one month to two months, giving eligible students additional time after completing their courses.
